Hesperis matronalis
I know I say this a lot but this is one of my favourite and classic cottage garden staples.
I love toddling through my garden at dusk. That’s when she really shines against the darkening sky and smells particularly heavenly. Insects seem to feel it too – they’re drawn to her like magic.
If this biennial lady is happy, she’ll self-seed every year and delight you with endless flowers. Colours can vary from white to pink and purple.
She’s a perfect companion for roses and snails leave her alone, which is always a bonus.

Where: Full sun, partial shade
When: February to April inside, April to June outside.
Spacing: 30cm (12")
Harvesting/Flowering: June to July, the following year.
Tip: Her scent is most intense in the evenings.
